So You Bought A Home, What Now? Move-In Checklist

If You Just Bought A New Home, Follow This Move-In Checklist!

First of all, congratulations! Purchasing a new home is incredibly exciting. Now that you’re getting ready to move in, there are a few tasks you should prioritize. These are things which are best done before you’re overwhelmed on move-in day. Let’s get started and check off these list items ASAP!

Change Locks

To be safe, it’s best to go ahead and change all the external locks on your new house. You don’t know what extra keys the previous owners may have handed out and forgotten about. Replace these locks and have some extra keys made for your personal use. If you have a garage door keypad, take some time to change the code on it as well. Do this early on so you don’t forget during the move in process.

Detectors & Air Filters

It’s time to perform a small inspection of your own. Go around your new home and test each of the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re working properly. Change batteries if needed, and if that doesn’t fix any that aren’t working, call professionals. Also, take a look at the air filters in your HVAC system to see if they need replacement. Both of these steps are crucial in ensuring your family is protected inside your home.

Too Much Stuff!

When moving, we often realize just how much “stuff” we really have. It’s a good idea to go through your clutter at your current home and decide what is worth moving over. It will be much easier to part with these belongings before moving them into your new home. It also makes moving a little easier! Make a few separate piles for donating, selling, or tossing. This way, you’ll head into your new home with a fresh start (and less boxes!).

Meet The Neighbors

It’s great to go ahead and greet your new neighbors early on! It’s always helpful to be familiar with those who live around you in case of an emergency or for any help you may need. Your neighbors may even know some helpful information about your property, such as the internet available there, local lawn care service, and more. Don’t be afraid to go over and say hello!

Book A Mover

If you’re planning to use a moving company, be sure to get in contact with a few companies well in advance. Ask for quotes and for their availability on your ideal move in date. Once you’ve found the perfect fit, book them early on! Doing so will secure your moving dates and provide you with peace of mind. Otherwise you may be forced to DIY and become your own personal mover.
