1. Beetlejuice
After dying in a car accident, main characters Barbara and Adam find themselves stuck in their old home. When new residents arrive, Barbara and Adam try to scare them away, but end up requesting the help of a malicious spirit named Beetlejuice.
Starring many well-known Hollywood actors and actresses like Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, this fantasy/ comedy is a must-watch during the Halloween season.
2. Monster House
Monster House isn’t too old of a movie, but a classic for the younger generations nonetheless. Monster House is an impeccably narrated and designed family-friendly animated horror film. This movie is centered around 3 kids who discover their neighbor’s house has some darker secrets than they thought… and even a life of its own! The mission? Destroy the house before trick-or-treaters arrive on Halloween night!
3. Halloweentown
Halloweentown is another family-friendly classic Halloween movie. Going back to 1988, this comedy/ adventure film follows Marnie and her younger siblings as they explore the life of their grandmother – a witch. That’s not the only surprise they discover, as they soon find out they’ll be facing evil in a battle to keep Halloweentown safe for ‘supernatural beings.’
4. Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus follows the story of Max and his younger sister Dani who moved to Salem, Massachusetts around Halloween. After hearing stories of the Sanderson Sisters, 3 witches who terrorized the town in years passed, Max decides he wants to find out what’s true and what’s not for himself. After quickly realizing he got himself in deeper trouble than he bargained for, he has to find a way to stop these sisters from taking over again.
5. Casper
Released in 1995, Casper is a supernatural comedy starring a kind young ghost and a curious girl named Kat. When Kat and her father move into a mansion in Maine to extract the ghosts, things get complicated. As Kat’s father struggles to remove Casper’s uncles from the home, Kat and Casper begin a complicated relationship that’s only made worse by those around them.
This family-friendly movie is a well- executed take on a sweet love story mixed with the perfect amount of comedy.
6. Poltergeist
This horror film is truly bone-chilling. When a California family begins experiencing the presence of the supernatural through their TV, it all seems like fun and games. What began as a friendly and playful experience, quickly turns worrisome when the daughter goes missing. As the attitude of the spirits change, the familys’ quickly follows and they turn to a parapsychologist for help. While this film is rated PG, it does contain scenes which may be scary for children.
7. Goosebumps
Goosebumps is a thrilling comedic horror film following main characters Zach and Hannah as they fight against fictional monsters that have come to life from the books written by Hannah’s father. They go through tons of adventures as they try and return these beasts back to where they belong.
8. Labyrinth
This 1986 musical fantasy takes place in the vivid imagination of the main character, Sarah. When Sarah’s baby brother is taken by the goblin king, she is given 13 hours to find her way through a maze with a series of obstacles to get her brother back. The unique aesthetics of this movie are what make it so memorable and timeless, even decades later.
9. The Addams Family
If you’ve never seen The Addams Family, you’re missing out on another truly unique classic film. When a con artist finds out the Addams have a long-lost family member, they introduce a fraud into the Addams’ home to sabotage them and steal their fortune. The humor in this dark comedy is better suited for a mature audience.
10. Dracula
The Dracula we’re talking about here is the first-ever produced Dracula movie released in 1931. This supernatural horror film followed Count Dracula as he wreaked havoc on civilians, sucking their blood and turning them into vampires. The only person who could potentially stop him: vampire hunter Van Helsing.
11. Charlie Brown
All the Charlie Brown movies are classics, but for Halloween, you have to check out It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. While the ‘peanuts’ celebrate Halloween, Linus holds his faith in the Great Pumpkin, trying to convince the others he’s real. This short and sweet animation was released in 1966 and is only 25 minutes long. You’ve definitely got time to watch this one!
12. Edward Scissorhands
Edward Scissorhands is a fantasy romance that, yes, is a perfect movie for the Halloween season. When a scientist passes before finishing his greatest creation, he leaves behind an uncompleted animated human being named Edward. Edward’s life is complicated and his scissors for hands don’t make things any easier. When he’s taken in by a local saleswoman, he meets the love of his life, and attempts to win her over.
13. The Little Vampire
The Little Vampire follows a young boy, Tony, who moves to a new town and is having trouble making friends. That changes, however, after meeting Rudolph, a kid vampire. When Rudolph and his family are in danger of being hunted by a vampire slayer, Tony must find a way to save his friend. This adventure film is family-friendly and a great movie to watch with the kids!
